I was 16. Our German class was a joke; the teacher would teach for maybe 10 minutes of the allotted hour, and we were allowed to do whatever for the remainder of the time.

Most days, my friends and I would play cards and talk about all kinds of things, very little of which involved the language we were studying.

One day, the subject of slash came up (what we called it before yaoi) for some reason. I had never heard of such a thing, and upon making said confession, my friend got the most evil grin on her face and told me I would love it, but dropped the subject.

The next day, after our ten minutes of required attention were up, a packet of paper was slammed on the desk in front of me, along with a single command:

"Read it."

So I did. It was a one shot of Harry/Draco where Harry discovered he was gay in front of the whole class. You know, a classic trope and all that. Nothing terribly spicy.

But you have to understand: I was raised in an incredibly sheltered, very Christian household. Being gay was a terrible sin of course, and the concept of fictional characters being used outside of their stories was something I literally did not think was allowed.

And I. Fucking. Loved. It.

That night, I started looking up other kinds of fan fiction (of course I started with Star Wars), and over the next couple of weeks, I learned so much about the world of slash. Eventually, I found myself hanging out on foreverfandom.net, where I stayed for years.

So I guess the answer to the poll is "paper", because I have no idea where my friend got that one shot from.

And look how much I've grown as a person because of it.
